Garbage, the City and Death

Garbage, the City and Death

Plastic Theatre Presents The Irish premiere of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's   'Garbage, the City and Death'

Smock Alley Theatre (Boys' School)

Directed by Jane Mulcahy

An infamous anti-musical about power, prostitution, property and prejudice.

The hauntingly atmospheric performance space of Smock Alley Boys' School is the ideal location for this fascinating, provocative piece of theatre filled with bizarre songs, interpretative dance and drag queen numbers set in post-war Frankfurt (described as being "as uninhabitable as the moon") against the back-drop of a corrupt building boom. Garbage, the City and Death focuses sharply on power politics - in the home, on the street  and in the corridors of government - the beauty and brutality in human relationships, collective guilt  and the cruelty of un regulated commerce which savagely chews people up and spits them out.  Given the fact that Ireland is experiencing its own economic upheaval due, in part, to political corruption and unsustainable property development, Fassbinder's controversial anti-musical is very timely indeed; especially as many of the degraded characters in the play blame their suffering on real or/a state exploitation.
