Mandragola
Theatre, Comedy
Presented by TURNING WORM THEATRE COMPANY
Mandragola written by one of the world's most profoundly influential political thinkers, Niccolo Machiavelli. Dating from the early 16th century, it tells the story of how a wealthy young playboy, Callimaco Guadagni, determined to steal the heart of a married woman, manages to use and manipulate everyone around him - including a parasite, a corrupt priest, the woman's mother, and even the woman's husband - in order to get what he wants. Turning Worm present this overlooked comedy masterpiece under the direction of the Gaiety School of Acting's Antoinette Duffy.
The cast of four actors -Sarah Barragry, Christopher Samuel Carroll, Phil Kingston, and Eoghan McLaughlin - play a cast of seven characters in an exuberant, fast-paced, and physical manner modeled on the Italian Commedia style developed in the same era as that from which the play hails.
Under the guise of hilarious farce, the plot involves a myriad of twists and questionable ethics that would be considered extremely controversial even in modern times. Underlying every action is a biting criticism of power politics - in both class and gender - that resonates as much today as at any point in history. The audience is guaranteed to leave the theatre not just entertained, but primed for heated debate...
