POOR TOM

POOR TOM

Written by Martin M. Maguire
Directed by Patrick Sutton

In collaboration with
The Gaiety School of Acting and Marquette University, USA

Poor Tom is set in a mythical country at a time unknown but with a contemporary take on war and peace and how social order can be perverted to the aims of the few at the expense of the multitude.

Locked in a hellish circle, the people of Poor Tom must work to feed the war with munitions, with their sweat and tears and with their sons and fathers.

Human life is cheap as all is sacrificed for the cause of their country and everyone is answerable to a leadership who must keep the wheels of production oiled and their people's eyes fixed on a righteous victory.

Enter Tom, a deserter, therefore despised and dispensable but determined to turn people away from the given truths.

With the help of his acolyte Angela and at odds with Hannah, his nemesis, maddened by the death of her husband on their wedding day, he escapes from the prison and campaigns to turn hearts and minds away from destruction.

He is greeted with warmth and love and music by those who see his way is true but there are others who prize their country without question who will meet his challenge head on.
