Chairman's Introduction

Joe Dowling, Artistic Director of The Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis, USA and Chairman of The Gaiety School of Acting.

I am delighted that the Gaiety School of Acting, Ireland's premier drama school, is now offering American students the unique opportunity to spend time with us in the heart of cultural Ireland exploring the rich traditions of Irish theater. We have developed a series of three and four week programmes, that are both theatrically challenging and educationally valuable. The program includes practical acting classes examining the work of some of our greatest Irish Writers (including Samuel Beckett, Brian Friel, John Millington Synge, Marina Carr, Martin McDonagh to name but a few), lectures by some of Ireland's leading academics and a social program of theater visits and traditional music that will keep you entertained! We run our three week actor training program in January and May and our four week program in July, making them ideally suited to American students who have a summer or mid-term break at their college.  I established the Gaiety School of Acting in 1986 in response to the lack of any full time training opportunities in Ireland at that time. The school has grown in strength and now offers the most comprehensive training program for actors in Ireland. As Chairman of the Gaiety School of Acting and as Director of the Guthrie, may I encourage you to explore the attached pages and please feel free to contact the school in Dublin with any questions or queries you may have (info@gaietyschool.com). We look forward to giving you the best Irish Welcome to Irelands Premier Drama School. Best Wishes, Joe Dowling
