Cork Young Gaiety Saturday School

CORK SATURDAY SCHOOL (4 – 15 yrs; Youth Theatre Company: 13 - 19 years)

The Young Gaiety Saturday School is the most comprehensive acting course available to young actors in Ireland. The year long programme consists of 3 ten week terms. The structure of the course is both flexible and comprehensive, allowing students to participate in anything from a 10 week course to a three year cycle. Within each age group, you can choose between the Drama Workshop and the Performance Workshop.

DRAMA WORKSHOP (DW)

Have fun, meet new friends, gain confidence and expand your imagination in the Drama Workshop. Aimed at students who are just beginning to study drama, this lively, interactive workshop focuses on confidence building exercises, improvisation and teamwork, and culminates in a devised showcase at the end of each term.

Participants of the Drama Workshop can expect to:

  • learn how to work effectively and confidently with their peers
  • expand their overall communication skills
  •  be inspired to find confidence in themselves and their ideas
  • have fun

PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP (PW)

Entrance to the Performance Workshop is by recommendation from our tutors. In this workshop specific performance skills such as voice, movement, characterisation, improvisation, ensemble and devising will be developed. Each term, a new performance skill will be introduced such as dance, singing, mime or puppetry, which will be demonstrated in an end of term showcase. This course is ideal for those students who are serious about acting and wish to begin developing solid skills. The classes are as much about the process as they are about the final showcase and performance

Participants of the Performance Workshop can expect to:

  • have a place to find their own voice and express their thoughts and ideas
  • have a chance to explore alternative ways to present and tell stories
  • make friends and learn to work closely as part of a group
  • get a chance to try out new performance skills
  • lay the foundation for the development of a well rounded actor

YOUTH THEATRE COMPANY

Cork (13-19yrs)

The Youth Theatre Company is the most advanced and intensive training for young people in the Gaiety School of Acting. Admission to the company is by audition for students who have attended at least one other course in the GSA programme.

Throughout the year members of the company will not only expand their acting skills but also learn and experience firsthand running a theatre company and creating a piece of theatre. Each year the company produces a showcase of new work created by the members from scratch at the end of term one and a full length production at the end of term three.  Members will be involved in all aspects from fundraising to publicity, from writing to acting, from sound design to costume design and much more.

The Youth Theatre Company is led by theatre professionals and every year specialist professionals are invited in to do workshops with the members.  Therefore it is a great stepping stone for young people who are serious about theatre. Heading into our 12th year many of our past members are by now themselves professionals in the business.

2011’s saw the Temple Bar company bring their play’ Never is an awfully Long Time’ to The Civic in Tallaght and  for the first time the company left Ireland and took part in The International Youth Arts Festival in London.

Participants of Youth Theatre Company can expect to:

  • experience first hand the running of a theatre company
  • experience all aspects involved in this from fundraising to writing, designing and acting
  • expand their acting skills by creating their own piece of theatre to be publicly performed
  • take part in a full length production in a professional setting at the end of the year
