Temple Bar Young Gaiety Saturday School

SATURDAY SCHOOL (4 – 15 yrs)

The Young Gaiety Saturday School is the most comprehensive acting course available to young actors in Ireland. The year long programme consists of 3 ten week terms. The structure of the course is both flexible and comprehensive, allowing students to participate in anything from a 10 week course to a three year cycle. Within each age group, you can choose between the Drama Workshop and the Performance Workshop. In Temple Bar we also offer a third option, The Young Performers Company.

DRAMA WORKSHOP (DW)

Have fun, meet new friends, gain confidence and expand your imagination in the Drama Workshop. Aimed at students who are just beginning to study drama, this lively, interactive workshop focuses on confidence building exercises, improvisation and teamwork, and culminates in a devised showcase at the end of each term.

Participants of the Drama Workshop can expect to:

  • learn how to work effectively and confidently with their peers
  • expand their overall communication skills
  • be inspired to find confidence in themselves and their ideas.
  • have fun

PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP (PW)

Entrance to the Performance Workshop is by recommendation from our tutors. In this workshop specific performance skills such as voice, movement, characterisation, improvisation, ensemble and devising will be developed. Each term, a new performance skill will be introduced such as dance, singing, mime or puppetry, which will be demonstrated in an end of term showcase. This course is ideal for those students who are serious about acting and wish to begin developing solid skills. The classes are as much about the process as they are about the final showcase and performance.

Participants of the Performance Workshop can expect to:

  • have a place to find their own voice and express their thoughts and ideas
  • have a chance to explore alternative ways to present and tell stories
  • make friends and learn to work closely as part of a group
  • get a chance to try out new performance skills
  • lay the foundation for the development of a well rounded actor

THE YOUNG PERFORMERS COMPANY (YPC) (TEMPLE BAR ONLY)

Advanced students can audition to join the Young Performers Company, where they will work with a group of highly motivated young actors, preparing devised and classical/contemporary scripts for performance, under the guidance of an experienced tutor/director. Each term culminates in a scripted performance. This course is suited to students who are experienced in drama and who wish to apply the skills they have developed through focused performance work. All students are asked to come to class prepared and to offer a full commitment to the 10 week term.

Entrance is by audition only.*

Participants of the Young Performer’s Company can expect:

  • social, personal and artistic development through the medium of drama
  •  learning commitment and responsibility for the role they play and the contribution they make to the workshop itself
  • freedom of creative expression in a fun and safe environment
  • team work, observation and feedback skills
  • tap into their strenghts and gain confidence
  • explore complementary elements of theatre such as writing, directing and stage management.

PLEASE NOTE THIS COURSE IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN TEMPLE BAR, FOR 11-13 YEAR OLDS AND 14-15 YEAR OLDS.

*Auditions for Young Performers Company: Auditions are held in workshop style. Students do not have to prepare or learn anything prior to attending but will be asked to participate in the workshop. Auditions are held at the same time as classes are normally held the week before term starts.
